Roommate Expense Splitter
Add your housemates and each bill, say who paid and how it is shared, and get each person's fair share, their net balance and a short list of payments that settles everyone. It handles equal splits, percentages, custom amounts and share weights (such as room sizes), several people paying one bill, and refunds. Everything is calculated in whole cents so totals always add up. Export a CSV or print the summary, and optionally save the group on this device.
Runs in your browser. Names and amounts are not uploaded. Saving is optional and stays on this device.
Add at least two people to start adding expenses.
How it works
- Add everyone's nickname and choose a currency.
- Add each bill or refund with a description, optional category and the total.
- Say who paid (or tick Several people paid) and how it is shared: equally, by custom amounts, by percentage or by share weights.
- Read the paid, fair share and net balance for each person, then the suggested payments.
- Copy the summary, download a CSV, print it, or save the group on this device.
Options explained
- Several people paid
- Enter how much each person paid. The amounts must add up to the bill total.
- Refund
- Reverses an expense: the money came back to the payer and the shares are credited.
- Share weights
- Splits in proportion to numbers you give, for example 2 for a larger room and 1 for a smaller one.
- Category
- Groups spending, such as housing or food, in a small summary table.
How the result is worked out
- Each person's net balance = what they paid − their fair share of every bill. Refunds count the other way.
- Amounts are whole cents (or whole units for currencies with no decimals). Leftover units go to the people with the largest fractional remainder, and to the first people for equal splits.
- Settling: exact matches between a debtor and a creditor are paired first, then the largest debtor pays the largest creditor. This never needs more than one fewer payment than the number of people, but it is a short plan, not always the provable minimum.
Example
Rent is 1,000. Ana paid 600 and Ben paid 400, split by share weights of 1, 2 and 2 for Ana, Ben and Cy. Fair shares are 200, 400 and 400, so Ana is owed 400, Ben is settled and Cy pays Ana 400.
Tips for better results
- Add everyone first, then add expenses as they happen, choosing who paid and who shares each cost.
- Use percentages for rent when rooms differ in size, and an equal split for shared bills.
- Pick the currency once per session. Convert any foreign-currency payments before entering them.
- Copy the summary into your group chat so everyone sees the same numbers.
Limitations
- One currency per session. Remove all expenses to change it.
- The tool records who owes whom. It does not move money or send reminders.
- Saved groups stay in this browser only.

Frequently asked questions
Can more than one person pay a bill?
Yes. Tick Several people paid and enter each person's amount. They must add up to the total.
What about a refund?
Add it as a refund. It reverses the original split so balances stay correct.
Why does the total sometimes differ by a cent?
It never does: leftover cents are allocated so the shares always add up to the bill exactly.
Does it work for yen or other currencies without cents?
Yes. Currencies with no decimals are handled in whole units.
