Weighted Grade Calculator

Not sure how your course is going? Enter each category or assessment with the marks you have so far, and this calculator shows your grade on the graded work, your projected final grade for any score you assume on the rest, and the best and worst cases. It treats a zero as a real mark and a blank as work not yet graded, so you never lose points by accident. Switch between weighted categories and total points, add an optional GPA scale, and save the result on this device if you want it later.

Extra credit, individual scores and dropped scores

Mark a component as extra credit to add its score on top without raising the total available. To drop your lowest quiz scores, list each score (for example 8/10, 7/10, 9/10) and say how many of the lowest to drop. The component then uses the kept scores.

GPA (optional)

A percentage grade and a GPA are different things. The default is a common US 4.0 scale; your institution may differ, so edit it to match.

Formulas: weighted: component points = earned ÷ out of × weight, current grade = banked points ÷ graded weight × 100. Points mode: current grade = total earned ÷ total available graded points. Projected grade = (banked + remaining × assumed %) ÷ total available. GPA = Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ credits.

How it works

  1. Name your course and choose how it is graded: weighted categories (each with a percentage weight) or total points.
  2. Add each component with the mark you earned and what it was out of. Leave the earned box empty for work not marked yet.
  3. Read your current grade, then use What if? to enter the score you expect on the remaining work, a target grade and a pass mark.
  4. Optionally turn on the GPA scale, edit it to match your institution, and add credits for each course.
  5. Copy the results, download a CSV, print, or save the courses on this device.

Options explained

Weighted categories
Each component has a weight that is a percentage of the course. Components with no mark yet are left out of the current grade.
Total points
Components are added up as points earned over points available. Weights are ignored.
Extra credit
Adds to the points earned without raising the total available, so a score can go above the maximum.
Individual scores and drop lowest
List scores such as 8/10, 7/10, 9/10 and drop the lowest ones by percentage. The component then uses the scores that are kept.
What if?
Shows the projected final grade for the percentage you assume on the unfinished work, plus the lowest and highest grade still possible.

How the result is worked out

  • Weighted mode: each component contributes mark ÷ out of × weight points. Current grade = points banked ÷ weight of graded work × 100.
  • Points mode: current grade = total earned ÷ total available graded points × 100.
  • Projected grade = (points banked + remaining weight × assumed %) ÷ total weight.
  • Needed on the remaining work = (target × total weight − points banked) ÷ remaining weight.
  • GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits, using the scale you set.

Example

Biology 101 has assignments (30%, 27 out of 30), a midterm (30%, 68 out of 80) and a final (40%, not yet taken). Points banked are 27 + 25.5 = 52.5 of 60, so your current grade is 87.5%. If the final goes at 70% the projected grade is 80.5%; to finish on 80% you need about 68.75% on the final.

Tips for better results

  • Enter marks as earned and out-of values (for example 27 out of 30). Percentages are worked out for you.
  • Leave the earned box empty for work that has not been marked. It is left out of your current grade rather than counted as zero.
  • If your weights do not total 100%, an assessment is missing from the list. Check the syllabus.
  • Use the GPA option only with your institution's own scale, and fill in credits so courses are weighted correctly.

Limitations

  • Institutions round and apply rules differently. This is a calculator, not your official grade.
  • Dropped scores are chosen by percentage. If your course drops by points or uses another rule, enter the scores you want counted.
  • The default GPA scale is a common US 4.0 scale. Edit it to match your institution.
  • Saved data lives only in this browser. Clearing site data removes it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a blank mark the same as zero?

No. A blank means not graded yet and is left out of your current grade. Enter 0 for a mark you really received.

Why do my weights not add up to 100?

Usually an assessment is missing. The tool warns you and still calculates with the weights as entered, scaled to the total.

Can I use it for a points-based course?

Yes. Choose Total points, enter points earned and points available for each item, and weights are ignored.

How is extra credit counted?

It adds to the points you earned but not to the points available, so your percentage can go above 100%.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Saving is optional and only keeps a copy on this device.
