Words to Pages Converter

How long will 2,500 words be on the page? It depends on font, size, line spacing and margins. Choose a quick preset such as 12 pt double spaced, or set your own paper size, font, size, spacing and margins, and see an estimated page count with a likely range. Add pages for a cover, references or an appendix. The estimate shows its working and is honest about uncertainty: headings, tables and figures change real pagination, so treat it as a planning guide, not a guarantee.

275Words per page
0.0 to 0.0Likely range

Estimate only. Real documents paginate differently because of headings, tables, figures and paragraph spacing, which is why a range is shown. Presets are common rules of thumb.

How it works

  1. Enter a word count, or paste your text and let the tool count it.
  2. Choose Quick presets or Custom page layout.
  3. For a custom layout, pick the paper, font, size, line spacing and margins.
  4. Add extra pages for a cover page, references or an appendix if they are not in your word count.
  5. Read the estimate and its likely range, then copy it.

Options explained

Quick presets
Common rules of thumb such as 275 words per page for 12 pt double spaced with 1 inch margins.
Custom page layout
Estimates words per page from paper size, font, font size, line spacing and margins.
Extra pages
Pages that are not part of the word count, added to the total.

How the result is worked out

  • Custom layout: characters per line = text width ÷ (font width factor × font size); words per line = characters ÷ 5.7 × 0.8 to allow for ragged lines and paragraph ends; lines per page = text height ÷ (font size × 1.15 × spacing).
  • Words per page = words per line × lines per page. Pages = words ÷ words per page, plus any extra pages.
  • The likely range is about 12% either side of the body estimate.
  • Font width factors are typical averages: Times New Roman 0.42, Arial-style sans-serif 0.5, Courier 0.6 of the font size.

Example

2,750 words at 12 pt Times New Roman, double spaced, with 1 inch margins on US Letter is roughly 300 words per page, or about 9.2 pages, with a likely range of about 8.1 to 10.3 pages. Adding a cover page and a one-page reference list adds 2 more.

Tips for better results

  • Pick the preset that matches your formatting rules, or enter your own words per page after testing a sample page.
  • Headings, tables, figures and block quotes take more space than their word count suggests, so add some allowance.
  • Always confirm the real page count in your word processor once formatting is final.

Limitations

  • Real documents differ because of headings, block quotes, tables, figures and paragraph spacing.
  • The custom layout uses average letter widths, not the exact metrics of your installed font.
  • Pages are not rounded: 9.2 means a little over nine pages.

Frequently asked questions

How many words fit on a page?

About 275 to 300 for 12 pt double spaced with 1 inch margins, and about 500 to 600 single spaced. Your layout changes this.

Why show a range?

Because pagination depends on things this tool cannot see, such as headings and figures.

Does A4 differ from Letter?

Slightly. A4 is a little narrower and taller, so the words per page change a little. Choose your paper size in the custom layout.

Should I include references in the word count?

That depends on your assignment. If they are not counted, add their pages in Extra pages.
