How Many Pages Is My Word Count? A Practical Guide

Written by the MicroTools Hub team · Updated

Assignments are often set by page count, but you write by word count. Converting between them is only ever an estimate. This guide gives typical ratios, explains what changes them, and shows how to check your real page count.

Typical words per page

For a standard page with 1-inch margins and a common 11 or 12 point serif or sans-serif font, widely used rules of thumb are:

  • Double spaced, 12 pt: about 250 to 300 words per page (275 is a common middle value).
  • 1.5 spaced, 12 pt: about 350 to 400 words per page.
  • Single spaced, 12 pt: about 500 to 600 words per page.

Example: A 2,200-word essay at 275 words per page is 2,200 ÷ 275 = 8 pages, double spaced.

What changes the answer

  • Font and size: a wider font fits fewer words on each line. Changing from 12 pt to 11 pt can add roughly 10 to 15 percent more words per page.
  • Margins and page size: US Letter and A4 differ slightly, and narrower margins fit more.
  • Headings, block quotes and paragraph spacing: every heading and every extra blank line uses space without adding many words.
  • Tables, figures and code: they usually take far more space than their word count suggests.
  • Title page, abstract and reference list: check whether your page limit includes them.

How word counters count

Different programs disagree slightly. Some count any run of non-space characters, including a standalone dash or symbol; others count only tokens containing letters or digits. Hyphenated words such as 'well-known' and contractions such as 'don't' are normally one word. Footnotes, headers and text boxes may be included or excluded depending on settings. If your instructor sets a limit, use the counter they name, and leave a little margin.

Budget your words before you write

Turning a limit into a plan makes drafting easier. As an example, for a 2,000-word essay you might allow about 200 words for the introduction, 1,500 across the main sections, 200 for the conclusion and leave about 100 as slack for edits. Divide the 1,500 among your points according to their importance, and note the budget beside each heading. If a section runs over, either cut it or move words from a less important one.

Check your real page count

  1. Format the document exactly as the assignment requires (font, size, spacing, margins) before you count pages.
  2. Use the page count shown by your word processor, or export to PDF and check the PDF page count.
  3. Look at the last page. A page with only a few lines might not count in the way your instructor expects, so check the rule.

Reading and speaking time

Word count also converts to time. Adults reading silently average roughly 200 to 250 words per minute for general text, but dense academic material is much slower. Speaking at a comfortable presentation pace is usually about 120 to 150 words per minute, so a five-minute talk is roughly 600 to 750 words. Treat these as planning figures and time yourself aloud.
